Thai massage has been taught and practiced in Thailand for more than a thousand years. The principles of Thai massage are based on the body’s energy paths. While Thai massage does include similar techniques as Swedish massage, it also embraces rigorous yoga-like stretches. In Thai massage, the entire body is pushed, pressed, rocked, vibrated, and rhythmically compressed by the therapist’s body—hands, feet, elbows, knees, and forearms.

What is PLAI?
Plai (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) is a member of the Zingiberaceae family, as is Ginger essential oil but unlike Ginger, Plai has been used in traditional Thai massage for many years to combat joint and muscle problems and it is more intense that using Ginger oil. It is native to Thailand, Indonesia and India and it is a pale yellow in colour, steam distilled from the fresh rhizomes unlike Ginger, which is distilled from the dried rhizomes.
The aroma is pleasantly fresh herbaceous and slightly peppery so has a nice zing!
Therapeutic application
It is used increasingly for management of pain, especially for any chronic conditions such as arthritis, inflammatory digestive disorders, inflammatory skin conditions and inflammatory respiratory conditions. It is also great for helping torn ligaments, tendonitis, muscular spasm, menstrual cramps and basically any chronic joint pain (Worwood 2016).
-
Joint and Muscle Pain from osteoarthritis - a cream was made up for self-application in a 3% dilution containing Plai, Black Pepper, Juniper and Lemon oils. We used slightly less of the Black Pepper oil as it is rubefacient and can cause sensitisation and irritation in high amounts. Within 2 days, the client reported a huge amount of pain relief and did not need to take his NSAIDS.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome - again mix this in a 3% dilution in a base lotion with Plai, Black Pepper, Orange and Peppermint and apply the blend across the abdomen following a bowel movement or anytime there is any cramping or pain in the abdominal area. In one case study, it only took 3 applications of this blend for the symptoms to recede.
Replacement Knee Surgery - Plai was blended with Nutmeg and Lemon oil as a postoperative blend for a total knee replacement in a 5% dilution in a rollette bottle above and below the surgical area. Tissue inflammation and swelling was significantly lower than in the area that had the same surgery without the use of the blend. With the Plai blend, no pain releif medication was required to control post surgical pain.

Hot herbal compress treatment or the Luk Pra Kob treatment has been used in Thailand for over 400 years. In Thai, Luk Pra Kob, is the name given to treatements that use Thai Herbal Compress. The literal translation is “pressing herbal sphere” or herbal ball. The compress ball includes many different herbs, roots, flowers and leaves that have been dried and wrapped in cotton fabric.
The Luk Pra Kob treatment has been approved by the largest, governing , Thai organization to be used as an anti-inflammatory, local analgesic, muscle relaxant, and to improve range of motion and local circulation.
The effects of the heat penetrates the pores, the skin becomes heated, blood vessels are dilated, and blood flow is stimulated, resulting in more rapid rebuilding and nourishing of the body’s tissues.
The herbs hold the heat from the steam to deeply penetrate and relax the muscles and tendons. This aids in stretching contracted or shortened muscles to alleviate pain and tension in the body.
Deep relaxation relieves stress, improving overall heath and well-being. The healing properties of the specific herbs provide added benefits for the sinuses, skin, respiratory system, heart, circulation, and digestion.

Thai Jade Gua Sha Massage (Lymphatic Drainage Massage, Face and Neck)
30 min plus 25 min head and shoulder massage $ 120
Followed by 55 minutes massage $175
What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is a traditional Eastern Asian practice that translate in English to “scraping the pain away” This practice has been adapted from a full body vigorously detoxifying treatment to a beautifying relaxing ritual for the face, neck, and decolletage. Healing crystal stones are gently stroked across the skin to encourage lymphatic flow, increase circulation, and smooth and lift the skin.
The lymphatic system removes toxins and metabolic waste from cells all over the body, carrying these substances away in lymphatic fluid (lymph). When lymph circulation is impaired or overwhelmed, lymph fluid can build up. This shows up in the face as swelling and puffiness, and even bags under the eyes.

Facial Lymphatic Massage
1. Wash your face and pat dry.
2. Lightly coat your index and middle fingertips (both hands) with your favorite moisturizer.
3. Find one of your key lymph drainage points where the end of jaw bone meets your neck. (If you've ever had a swollen lymph gland when you were sick, this is the same spot.)
4. Using your fingertips, gently stroke downward from this spot towards your collarbone. Repeat 20 times.
5. Move up higher to your temple and gently stroke downward towards your collarbone. Repeat 20 times.
6. Find the spot just under your cheekbone (another area with a known lymph vessel). Gently stroke downward 20 times.
7. Lightly tap around the eye area to "wake up" the lymph.
8. Place your fingertips where your eyebrows begin near your nose and gently sweep your fingertips outwards towards your temple. Repeat 20 times. Apply more moisturizer as needed to help your fingertips lightly glide. Avoid tugging or pulling the skin.
9. Repeat this same light stroking in the under-eye area.
10. Now go in reverse: sweeping and stroking your eye area, cheekbones, temple, and jawline.
11. Finish your massage by lightly tapping all over your face. Start tapping at your forehead and move downward towards your jawline.

Cold stone massage therapy at Crown Thai Massage
Using cold marble stones, we gently massage the face, neck, and shoulders. The cooling sensations from using marble can promote circulation, reduce inflammation, decrease muscle spasms, and act as a powerful decongestant for the body.
Once the cold stones are lifted from the skin, the blood vessels dilate and resupply fresh blood and oxygen to the affected areas.
Here are some of the more common benefits of cold stone massage.
Relieve Migraines On the temples, forehead, and sides of the face, cold stone massage helps reduce the flow of blood to these areas. This can relieve migraines and severe headaches by reducing pulsing sensations, throbbing pain and discomfort. Soothe Sinusitis The cold stones can improve lymphatic flow by opening and draining lymph nodes. This can help alleviate symptoms of sinusitis or allergenic rhinitis, and reduce other sinus problems such as pressure, swelling, congestion, and postnasal drip.

Body scrubs remove dead skin cells, and so provide several benefits:
They allow your skin to absorb moisturizer better. By doing dead skin cell buildup, any moisturizer applied afterward will soak into the skin more thoroughly. They unclog pores and prevent ingrown hairs. They leave your skin smooth and more even. When dry skin is not removed, it makes the skin rough to the touch and has a dull, cracked texture and appearance.
Besides that body scrubs can help promote circulation and blood flow. Healthline.com

If a person took pure gold (24-karat gold) and put it on an area of infection or a sore spot, it is said that it will help heal the wound and control infection. Moreover, in olden times, it was considered that gold possessed an energy that brought warm, soothing vibrations to the body to aid healing, for when the body relaxes and the blood vessels in the cells aren’t as constricted, blood can move through the tissue spaces more easily. Since all healing is the growth of new cells replacing the dead cells, the body would heal much better and faster, just as those people who have learned to meditate and use the other various arts of relaxation can testify.
-
Gold is believed to have a relaxing effect. When you feel something made of 24-karat gold it will have a soft, velvety texture. Nothing feels like pure gold. But it loses its effectiveness when combined with other metals. Gold is a great de-stressor; since ancient time gold has been recommended for lifting up your mental attitude and emotional states.

Partially due to its popularity in the United States, the word massage has become synonymous with Swedish massage. This massage style was developed in 1812 at the University of Stockholm through the dissection candavers.
Swedish massage incorporate five major types of techniques: effleurage (gliding movements), petrissage (kneading movements), tapotement (gentle drumming or pounding movements), vibration, and friction.

Similar to Swedish Massage, but with firm pressure and slow strokes deep tissue massage is used to break up scar tissue and break down muscle adhesions. This technique focuses on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles, bones, and joints).
The term “deep tissue” is often misused to identify a massage that is performed with sustained deep pressure. Deep tissue massage is a separate category of massage therapy, used to treat particular musculoskeletal disorders and complaints and employs a dedicated set of techniques and strokes to achieve a measure of relief. It should not be confused with a “deep pressure” massage, which is performed with sustained strong, occasionally intense pressure throughout an entire full-body session. Deep tissue massage is applied to both the superficial and deep layers of muscles, fascia , and other structures.
